Filled with the Holy Spirit – Part 2

Unfortunately due to technical difficulties  there is no podcast this week.

But here are Justin’s notes.

Recap of last week

We have been looking at what it looks like to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

  • Constant Prayer

We discussed how important it is for us to call on the Holy Spirit to help us when we pray as the spirit intercedes for us and provides the power for us to know how and what to pray.

  • Know the Scriptures (believe, trust, and boldly preach them)

Acts 3:11-26, Peter witness to the crowd outside the temple after the healing of the lame man.

  • Look for where the spirit is moving and join in as a witness of the gospel

Acts 4:1-22, Peter and John are taken before the council accused of false teaching.  Peter uses historical accounts of Scripture to explain how the healing miracle of the lame man was done.

THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IN MY UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE IS SINGULAR.  THE HOLY SPIRIT IS PERFECT, SO IT WOULD NEVER ONLY PRODUCE SOME OF THE FRUIT.

  • Strong Faith (Really trusting in God’s promises) – Makes us obedient

Acts 6: 1-7

Here we learn about Stephen, one of the seven, that is chosen to help serve the hellenists (non Hebrew speaking).  AND STEPHEN, FULL OF FAITH AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

Our Faith is driven by what we believe about the promises of God.  We have to be constantly reminding ourselves of the promises of God.

WHAT HAS GOD SHOWN YOU LATELY ABOUT HIS FAITHFULNEES, HOW HAS HE COME THROUGH FOR YOU?

  • We can also go back to Hebrews 11 (Hall of Faith) and be reminded of some with incredible faith.

Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses

(There is a common theme that each had hit a point where they realized and believed that God had some so much better for us after our temporary life on this earth.)

Full of faith is also being full of the spirit, because the Holy Spirit is the only power that can allow us to be full of faith in Christ Jesus.

I love how Jesus talks in Matthew 18 about how we must become like children.  That is referencing the humility of a child, which is a perfect example of an attribute of the Holy Spirit.

The unknown can be scary, but by faith through the Spirit, the unknown is made known.  So, we run after you with reckless abandon.

  • Grace/Love in the midst of suffering  and persecution

James 1:2-4

We are to count it all joy, because the testing of our faith produces steadfastness.  This is tough when things don’t seem to be fair or going right.

What a witness it is when during these time we show the Grace and love that has been shown to us.

Acts 6 8-15

Stephen full of wisdom and spirit show exactly how we full of spirit even in the midst of their scheme to try and accuse him of blasphemy.  The accuser could not compete with his wisdom and power.  They brought him before the council and all who sat on the council said he had the face of an angel.

Acts 7:54-60

As Stephen is being stoned and fell to his knees he cried with a loud voice “Lord, do not hold this sin against them”.  What an example of Grace and Love.

What would that look like our lives, because persecution is coming.

  • Joyous members of the fellowship.

We rest in God’s promises just like we Stephen did and then the church spread like wildfire after the death of Stephen.

WHERE DOES OUR JOY COME FROM?

The joy of the Lord is our strength.

I love every time we get together right now as it so evident that the Spirit is moving in a mighty way.  There is no question that everyone has a sense of joy and anticipation about them just waiting to see what God is up to.  Don’t lose that.

As James said, count it all joy.  We all have junk and are going to go through some stuff.  Continue to be encouraging and build each other up.

When we worship, red line it.  Quit listening that little voice in your head that has been telling you since you were a kid, that you should only worship a certain way.

There is so much joy in that evident presence of God.
